Everybody loves celebrity couple Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson! People are not surprised that their marriage lasted for so many years and still going strong. Their recent anniversary post online has melted hearts around the world.
The couple recently celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on social media, which set hearts a-flutter. Tom and Rita had their fair share of the limelight, individually and as a couple, and they supported each other all these years.
On her Instagram and Twitter accounts, Rita Wilson posted a photo of Tom Hanks giving her a yellow icing flower-filled cake with a beautifully written message that read, ‘Happy Anniversary.’ Although it was short, the sweet captions she wrote on her photo said it all… “LOVE is everything.”
The way Tom looked at Rita is a wish we all have… for someone to look at us the same way. Tom and Rita’s relationship started as co-stars in a movie that developed into a good friendship. The couple met on ABC’s show Bosom Buddies way back in 1981.
At the time, Tom was still married to Samantha Lewes, but he and Rita instantly became friends and enjoyed conversations with one another. Rita claims that Tom told the greatest stories and would always make her laugh.
In 1985, Tom and Rita reunited when they both starred in a movie together. They were lovers in the film, Volunteers, and their chemistry onscreen was evident.
Tom and Rita only made their relationship public in December 1986, a few months after Tom and his wife broke up. Tom and Samantha filed for divorce in 1987, paving the way for Tom and Rita’s budding relationship.
On April 30, 1988, Tom and Rita finally married and started a long-lasting and fruitful marriage.
Tom and Rita welcomed their first child, Chet, in 1990 and the second, Truman, in 1995. They both followed in their parents’ footsteps in the showbiz industry. Chet released a rap song in 2011 and had recurring roles in both the TV series Empire and Shameless. Truman portrayed a younger version of Tom’s character in the 2022 movie, A Man Called Otto.
Tom and Rita worked alongside each other on multiple projects in their 35 years together.
In 1993, they starred as siblings in the film Sleepless in Seattle. They co-produced the movie My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and recently, Rita produced the film A Man Called Otto. The couple had their share of ups and downs, but they have proved their undying support for each other by attending each other’s Walk of Fame Ceremonies, Tom’s Hand and Footprint Ceremony, Rita’s Broadway debut as Roxie Hart in Chicago, multiple movie premieres for Tom’s movie, and Rita’s music career and single launches.
The couple also stayed together through their most challenging times. Rita was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy and reconstruction, Tom has Type 2 diabetes, and together they fought COVID in 2020.
Although their 35 years of marriage is filled with ups and downs, they both knew they could rely on each other’s support. When Access Hollywood interviewed the couple and asked what their secret to long-lasting marriage was, their answer was only a few but meaningful. Humor, acceptance, and most especially, Tom making Rita’s morning coffee every day. Aww!
During an interview with Oprah, Tom said, “I won’t deny that providence was part of us finding each other, but our relationship isn’t magic — the way it’s shown in movies. But we both know that no matter what, we’ll be with each other — and we’ll get through it.”
