Shallots are a staple vegetable which can be found in any household. This pungent ingredient is known for bringing people to tears when they first cut into it. Despite this, the majority of the world’s people tend to use shallots in their cooking or use them for the health benefits they provide. Shallots are usually used as an ingredient in savory, hearty dishes or can be cooked as a main dish in their own right. According to the National Onion Association, shallots are high in antioxidants and amino acids which help in lowering blood pressure, preventing cell damage and promoting good digestion.

Instead of spending your money and buying shallots, here’s how you can reap the benefits of this amazing vegetable by growing them at home. This way you will have an unlimited supply without having to leave the comfort of your home!

Step 1: Prepare your egg cartons by poking holes in the bottom of each compartment. This is to ensure excess water can be drained away after watering your shallots.

Step 2: Place a shallot into each compartment and place the entire carton in a place with direct sunlight so that your plants can get all the nutrients they need to grow. Make sure you water the shallots twice a day.

Then just sit back and watch as your shallots sprout! Repeat the process after they mature and is ready for harvesting
