For those who frequently travel may never mind investing on high-quality cameras to capture precious moments on the trips. For that reason, some people opt to buy GoPro which is world-famous for its durability and compact size, making it the best choice for adventurous trips.
However, no one knew that GoPro is very durable to the point it able to keep shooting even when being engulfed by molten lava until recently!
An amateur photographer and a tour guide of Kilauea Ecoguides, Erik Storm was giving a tour around Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano.
In the tour, he decided to use his GoPro to film the flowing molten lava
But the lava moved too quickly and engulfed his camera before Erik realised the incident.
Unfortunately, he was unable to save his camera on time
“I was telling a story when the molten lava completely engulfed my GoPro,” Erik told Petapixel.com in an interview
“I used a geology rock hammer to pull it out of the lava and thought it was a total loss”
Later that day, Erik tried to chip off the cooled lava from his GoPro when he saw his camera’s WiFi light flashed blue as if it was still turned on.
He then found out that the GoPro’s SD card survived from being melted by the hot lava
Through the unharmed SD card, Erik managed to retrieve the footage of flowing scorching lava before it completely burned the camera
As the lava engulfed the camera, fire started to spark and the camera burst into flames
Soon, the footage turned dark as the lava cooled off and turned hard
The footage quickly make rounds on the Internet and it even showed Erik looking straight on it at the end of the footage
After Erik’s footage went viral, the public are totally amazed with the durability of GoPro camera but some suggested that his act was on purpose for the sake of getting attention from the public. However, Erik explained that it was an honest accident and he never wanted to sacrifice his GoPro for a viral video.
He was surprised like everyone else with how sturdy the camera was. “The camera even still worked although not a well as it did before,” Erik said. “Truly amazing it survived!”
Watch the full footage of when melting lava engulfed Erik’s GoPro. To remind you, melting lava could reach over 1160 degree Celsius so it is unbearably hot even being just a few metres from it
If you like Erik’s footage, why not share it with your friends and family, especially those who treasure their GoPro!
