Unexpected situations can provide us with a valuable lesson on the spot. If you were a kid who is suddenly given $655 (about GB£500) to spend on any toy you wanted from the most expensive store, what would you get? The latest gaming console, perhaps? Or a huge Lego set with thousands of pieces? Or maybe, an expensive action figure from Marvel?
YouTube users Paul Klein and Paul Wood put a child on the spot. Paul Wood’s son Bailey was given $655 to spend on any toy that he wanted. Naturally excited, the boy filled the bag with the toys he preferred. In the end, what he did brought tears to the eyes of his dad.
The YouTubers and Bailey stood in front of Hamley’s, one of the biggest toy stores in the whole world that boasts a collection of different characters from different games and shows, the latest gadgets for kids, and the latest gaming consoles that even grown-ups will buy.
The challenge was, Bailey was given $655 to spend in the store for 30 minutes. All he had to do was buy all the toys he wanted for the budget provided and consume them within the time limit. The excited boy carried a huge bag with him when he entered Hamley’s.
Meanwhile, the 2 YouTubers tried to guess what Bailey would get with the money they provided him. His dad guessed that the boy would get the biggest toy he wanted that cost within the budget given.
While guessing what Bailey will buy, Klein said that the kids have no idea about the true value of money since they do not know how it is made or how money makes an impact on people.
Initially, the 2 YouTubers were right. Bailey began filling his bag with toys that caught his eye. However, after all the excitement he felt while getting the toys, he stopped in one of the aisles and began returning the toys one after the other. Bailey began to be conscious of the money he was holding. Until his bag was empty, Bailey began to go out of the store with no toys.
Bailey returned the money to his dad but asked for $130 (about GB£100). Klein followed Bailey and stopped in front of a homeless man kneeling on the sidewalk. Bailey placed the money in the homeless man’s cup, who appreciated the gesture. Klein was surprised by Bailey’s mature gesture. Bailey pointed out that the homeless man needed it more and said that he did not need new toys since his parents always buy him new ones. Homeless people were not as privileged as he was.
“Dad always buys me toys,” he said in the video. “And he needed it more than I did because he hasn’t got a house.”
When the 3 reunited, Klein told Wood about Bailey’s kind deed. Wood never expected this from his son since he expected Bailey to come out from the store with a giant robot or a big drone. Klein informed Wood that Bailey is still looking for other homeless people to help with the money given to him.
Wood felt proud of the generosity of his son. He knelt down and hugged Baily tightly, feeling emotional about his son’s capability to think about others more than himself.
When the story was posted on Facebook, netizens shared their appreciation of Bailey’s kind and generous gesture. “This young man is a positive role model for other children his age. He is truly amazing. Well done.” One comment said.
