A night-shift nurse was checking in on her patients when she had a peculiar encounter with an elderly woman.
An elderly woman who was known simply as Grandma Chen had been admitted as a long-term patient in a hospital since she was diagnosed with cancer a few years prior. She had become familiar with the nurses and hospital staff because she loved to converse with them whenever she has the chance to.
The staff in turn, appreciate her positivity and chatty nature as the majority of the patients placed in long-term care prefer not to go beyond casual pleasantries. While the other patients have their family and friends visit them regularly, Grandma Chen never had any visitors. She said her son had not contacted her for more than 20 years and she has no living family beside her.
One night when a nurse had walked into her room, she was sitting on a chair looking out the window. She had a great view since her room was located on the 7th floor.
She was humming softly and didn’t turn to greet the nurse like she normally did. When she noticed the nurse coming in, she smiled and said to the nurse, “Thank you for taking care of me all this time, I’m going to leave here very soon. My friends are already waiting to accompany out of this hospital.”
The nurse went over to the window and noticed a group of men and women sitting on the chairs outside of the window. She found the scene peculiar because they were dressed in a 60’s style fashion. One of them seemed to look up to the window and gave a small wave. She then left the ward to carry on with her work.
The next day, she told her colleagues how strange Grandma Chen was acting the previous night and they could only stare at her in complete and utter disbelief.
It is standard procedure for nurses to check the wards thoroughly after the patient has been discharged. After they got over their shock, one of her colleagues told her that Grandma Chen had passed away at noon the previous day. She had personally gone to clear out her ward.
The nurse went pale as the thought sank in. She thought maybe it was just her imagination but she’d be lying to herself if she believed that. She suddenly recalled what she saw outside the window during the incident that night despite Grandma Chen was staying at 7th floor.
The nurse then composed herself and instead of being frightened by the encounter, she felt honored that Grandma Chen thanked her before leaving with her friends.
