Everyone thinks they know how uncertain and fragile life is until something truly unpredictable happen right before their eyes.
That was what Fiona Lowm felt when she witnessed a heartbreaking wedding that took place in the hospital where she works.
In a touching Facebook post she wrote on May 19, Fiona wrote about a young man who was in his early 30s came to the hospital, complaining that he had severe chest pain and weakness in his legs.
“Yesterday, we received a young man, 34-year-old, relatively healthy, maybe with just obstructive sleep apnea and hypertension, wake up in the morning, complained of severe chest pain and weakness in both leg, come to us immediately, and we did a series of radio imaging CT scan,” she wrote.
After a careful diagnose, they found out that the man had an aortic dissection, a life-threatening condition where the inner layer of the large blood vessel inside the heart was tearing apart.
Fiona added that the man’s condition was critical that the tear was actually “tearing from the exit of the heart down until his tummy.”
To make things even worse, he had a blood clot. “Added on, the blood vessels that supply to his internal organs including kidney, liver, and bowel already stucked by his own blood clot, both blood that supposed to go down to his leg are also blocked, which means, his legs and all other internal organs are already dying off,” Fiona wrote.
However, the man still managed to stay conscious at the time but it was not long before his condition got even worse as “every time his heart beats, it’s giving pressure to the blood vessels tearing wider and wider apart.”
Fiona continued that they knew the man would not have much chance to survive and later proceeded to tell his family to prepare for the worst.
They later found out that the man was supposed to tie the knot with his long-time girlfriend at the end of this year. Unfortunately, there was not much time left so the family decided to throw a simple wedding ceremony right there in the ICU.
With everyone witnessing the wedding including the doctors and the hospital staff, the man married his girlfriend before he took his last breath.
“It’s actually not dramatic or romantic like how the movies show (can’t remember the famous movie’s name) but I’m secretly tearing up.”
Following the touching story, Fiona had a reminder for everyone. “Life is fragile. You will never know what would happen tomorrow, so whatever dream you are looking upon, chase for it; appreciate your loved one besides. Life is unpredictable.”
