Terminally ill girl wished to marry her best friend—then two moms worked to fulfill her dream

This lovely little girl, literally born with a broken heart, fulfilled her dream of “marrying” her best friend before her open-heart surgery. The 5-year-old had a “wedding” photoshoot, and these sweet, innocent photos have garnered much attention online.

Sophia Elyssa Chiappalone from Meriden, Connecticut, was born with an irreparable heart condition.

“She was born with half of a heart—the whole right side of her heart was missing,” her mom, Kristy Somerset-Chiappalone, told NBC Connecticut.

Doctors said Sophia wasn’t likely to live past age 2, but, now at age 5, she has defied the odds. During her short life, Sophia has already undergone 26 operations, including three open-heart surgeries, according to My Record Journal.

Doctors could not give any life expectancy to her, as, according to them, there was no reason for her to be alive!

“She’s a walking miracle,” said Chiappalone, a single mother who has two other daughters, Alexandra, 8, and Gabriella, 7.

Sophia, or “Supergirl,” as her mom calls her, is currently also having respiratory problems and is due for another risky open-heart surgery next month at Boston Children’s Hospital.

But prior to that, the beautiful girl hoped to fulfill her wish to marry her best friend, Hunter Laferriere. The two kids have been inseparable since they met at Vacation Bible Camp when they were 3 years old.

“This is the first time going into surgery she knows what’s going on. She’s scared. She said ‘I just want to marry Hunter,’” Chiappalone told My Record Journal.

“I cried a lot,” Hunter’s mother, Tracey Laferriere, said having learned of Sophia’s wish.

“It was just sad that was what a five-year-old girl is thinking and wishing. I wanted to make it happen for her as much as I could.”

So, Sophia’s “big day” was planned for Oct. 24 at City Park.

Chiappalone’s friend, Jessica Boni of Bliss Bridal shop, sent four lovely gowns for Sophia to choose from for her big day.

The little couple’s wedding photoshoot was captured by Marisa Balletti-Lavoie of Sassy Mouth Photography.

Sophia and Hunter were all smiles during the entire shoot.

“They went on swings, the slides, threw their leaves, and had a tickle fight. I guess that’s what five-year-olds do at their weddings,” Chiappalone recalled.

The wedding photos, beautiful beyond words, vividly display the child couple’s innocence.

“That was a happiness that I have not seen from Sophia in so long,” Chiappalone said.

Overwhelmed by the support Sophia has received, Chiappalone wrote in a Facebook post, “My heart aches with joy with the people standing behind Supergirl on this fight. She’s fought to be alive since her first breath, but that’s all she knows.”

“I hope that Sophia is going to live a long life and marry Hunter when she’s 25,” Chiappalone said.

With all the love she’s gotten from family and friends, Sophia will hopefully continue to live her miracle and far outlive her real wedding one day. Stay strong, Supergirl!
